So, on the opening night, MVG was knocked out by Jeffrey de Zwann where lightening has struck twice in back to back singles majors with the last defeat at the UK Open in March.Layers were quick to install Gary Anderson as a 4/1 favourite, which is in to 3/1 after his first round win on Sunday. Rob Cross is still available at 4’s and Michael Smith at 10/1 with Sportingbet.
Looking at Tuesday on a best of 21 format and as ever the bookies favourites of Smith/Gurney/Lewis and Anderson pays a smidgen under 7/2 with Marathonbet. Backing their opponents Chisnall/de Zwann/Barney and Cullen pockets 85/1 for longshot backers on the night.
First up is Michael Smith versus Dave Chisnall in a matchup that sees Bullyboy at 4/9 to beat Chizzy at 21/10. It was great to see Chisnall back on the oche, as he is a great character on the circuit. He delivered on high checkouts with a 148 and 147 in successive legs and this is something Dave in my view is reliable on. What Chizzy has fallen down on is his maximum scoring netting just two in the game. Noticeably trimmer, perhaps the throw is not as consistent as it was despite generating 14 ton-40’s Dave started several legs on the 19’s and this was working for him effectively.
Smith leads 7-6 on thehead to head, and the former Premier League star has two victories over Bullyboy this year on the pro-tour circuit. It is possible that if the line begins going wrong for Dave, we will see the treble 19 action again, which puts Michael at 11/10 with Paddy Power for most 180s and 4/6 with Coral on the draw no bet option. With some disparity between the checkout lines, Ladbrokes are 5/6 on the 108.50 line whereas another firm is as high as 120.50. Cullen enjoyed a 10-3 win over Gerwyn Price in round one.
Joe Cullen battles Daryl Gurney in the second game, where the major winner is 8/11 with some places, with Cullen at 11/8. The former Postman leads the head to head with Superchin 5-3 with Gurney winning the last two.
I find this a difficult game to call, although like the prospect of Gurney at 7/10 to make the most 180’s however 4/5 would have been a more backable price. I may however take a small double on no first leg maximum at 8/11 general. I would be willing to take no maximum in the first leg in the Lewis match which follows that pays 19/10 with Skybet, a bet with a fair chance of landing.
Barney and Anderson finish off the night and hope to be up on the night to see out a possible classic.
Recommendations:
Smith – most 180s – 11/10 Paddy P 1pt
Chisnall – over 108.50 checkout – 5/6 Ladbrokes 1.25 pts
No 180 first leg – Gurney and Lewis games – 2.90 Skybet 1pt
